Studio Track

The Studio Track program is a competitive undergraduate program in which undergraduate students pursuing a visual arts major are given specific resources, including private studios, and access to a committee of faculty mentors along with an MFA mentor. The Studio Track culminates in a final BA thesis exhibition in the Logan Center gallery in the beginning of the spring quarter of their Studio Track year followed by a full departmental discussion of each student’s work in the gallery.

Most students apply for the Studio Track at the end of their third year so that they may enter it in their fourth year but the Studio Track may also be completed in the third year provided that students are able to complete the required seminars in order. Places in the program are limited and applicants are reviewed by a faculty committee at the end of each academic year. Decisions for the upcoming Studio Track are then announced in early summer.

BA cluster studios

In the fall or spring of their second or third year, Visual Arts majors take a required seminar (Studio Project I) which combines making images and objects with written analyses of art in museums and galleries, and the reading of relevant theoretical and historical material.

Students then enroll in Studio Project II which is a critique-based course utilizing group discussion and individual guidance in the service of advancing the art practice of students who are majoring in visual arts. Emphasis is placed on the continued development of student's artistic production that began in the preceding Studio Project I. Visits to museums and galleries with readings and written responses in addition to studio work, are required. Students can apply for consideration to the Studio Track program once they have completed, or plan to enroll in, Studio Project II.

Most students apply for the Studio Track at the end of their third year so that they may enter the Studio Track in their fourth year but the Studio Track may also be completed in the third year if students are able to complete the Studio Project II and III in order. As a Studio Track major, students take Studio Project III in the winter of their fourth year to prepare them for a group exhibition in the Logan Center gallery.
