“Upgrade Available”
Julia Christensen will present her ongoing research and art project about “upgrade culture”—the perceived need of having to relentlessly upgrade our electronics and media to remain relevant. This body of artwork, which spans photography, video, and a range of digital media, investigates how upgrade culture impacts our personal lives, institutional operations, and long-term scientific research, especially space travel. Christensen will also present about her current collaboration with scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory envisioning long-term space mission concepts, including an artwork to be embedded on a spacecraft that would travel to Proxima b, an exo-planet 4.2 light years from Earth.
