Working in painting and photography, respectively, Aliza Nisenbaum and Elliott Jerome Brown, Jr. have each developed their own approach to portraiture, drawing on strong connections with their subjects and fundamental questions about what it means to responsibly represent other individuals while making space for their interiority and lived experience.
Nisenbaum’s work was featured in Nine Lives at the Renaissance Society, which considered how stories shape our lives and the layering of individual experience and larger social structures; Brown’s work is on display in the exhibition Upkeep at the Arts Club, which explores everyday strategies of care and how they might disrupt the status quo. In this conversation, moderated by Renaissance Society Curator Karsten Lund and Arts Club Executive Director Janine Mileaf, the two artists explore convergences and divergences in their artistic practices, as well as the intersecting themes of the separate exhibitions in which they are participating at these two institutions.
