“Beatriz González: A Total Artist”

The Open Practice Committee in the Department of Visual Arts invites you to join us for this special occasion celebrating the Colombian artist, Beatriz González, with a talk by her long time studio assistant and art historian, Natalia Gutiérrez Montes.

This talk will offer a journey through Beatriz González's career spanning more than six decades, beginning with the transition from modern to contemporary art. Works such as her iconic furniture from the 1970s addressed the theme of aesthetic taste with irony and wit, while she defined herself as a provincial artist, thus challenging the hierarchies of local and universal art.

Since then, her political outlook has manifested itself in a critical and sustained observation of recent events in Colombia, consolidating a profound practice that allows her to approach the country's material, visual, and social history from a lucid and sensitive perspective. Throughout her career, González has addressed universal and deeply relevant issues, such as the losses caused by war, migration, environmental crises, and human vulnerability in the face of tragedy. Through her work, González has proposed new forms of critical representation, positioning her as a fundamental artist and thinker and a leading figure in Latin American art.

Following the talk, Gutiérrez Montes will be joined by González’s son, Daniel Ripoll, independent curator and writer Abigail Winograd, and Zespo of the Open Practice Committee, for an intimate conversation on the career and work of Beatriz González.
