Maya's practice engages sensitivity, pleasure, and fragility as material that precedes prejudice and permanence.

Maya was born and raised in Bombay, Maharashtra, India. Their social practice has taken the form of friendship, drawing, painting, video, installation, and movement — working alongside social workers to facilitate drawing and English-language learning for Dalit children in public schools on Tannery Road (Bangalore, 2018) and in rural Madhya Pradesh with the grassroots NGO Samaj Pragati Sahayog (2019–21). With support from the India Foundation for the Arts, Maya developed a Meat Festival with the butchers of Murphy Town Market (Bangalore, 2022), and has taken part in residencies and shows supported by the Foundation for Indian Contemporary Art (Delhi, 2018); Serendipity Arts Festival (Goa, 2018, 2022); the Kochi-Muziris Biennale (Kerala, 2016); 1ShantiRoad Gallery & Karnataka Chitrakala Parisath (Bangalore, 2022); and the Science Gallery (Bangalore, 2025). During her residency at Werksviertel-Mitte Kunst, supported by the Goethe-Institut, Maya made an installation around "Oktoberfest" for the whiteBOX, in conjunction with Lange Nacht der Museen (Munich, 2022).

Upon moving to Chicago, Maya developed a material practice during their MFA at the University of Chicago (2023–26), collaborating on exhibitions with people from the Logan Center for the Arts, the Cochrane-Woods Art Center, the Visual Resource Center, the Center for the Art of East Asia, and the Department of Art History.
