el n.k. lee (b. Los Angeles, based in Chicago) is a visual artist. By re-organizing the materials of painting, she draws a conflation between form and subject (the ‘structure’ with the ‘image’; the ‘artist’ with her ‘object’, the 'interior' with the 'exterior') in order to confuse the index and effects of how we view and respond to others' bodies. In her work, the painting moves across disciplines, hybridizing sculpture, assemblage, and the readymade, creating a sense of ‘mutilation’ or ‘mutability’ of the object, as well as the genre of painting at large. Her work rests in the expanded field of painting.
