Inside, Before They Speak

Artist and DoVA faculty member Julia Phillips presented her first institutional solo exhibition in the UK at the Barbican's Curve gallery in London, featuring new works which draw from her on-going interest in the body, conception, and human connection.

From the exhibition press: "Inside, Before They Speak features newly commissioned sculptures and drawings. Unfolding across The Curve, Phillips’s installation explores the surreal potential of the human body, visualizes the biological stages of conception, and proposes hypothetical apparatuses which merge the industrial with the anatomical. Whether in the enduring trace of an absent body or the loaded silence implied by her exhibition title, Phillips cultivates a sense of openness and ambiguity throughout her practice, allowing ample space for a host of readings."

An interview between Phillips and British writer, psychoanalytic psychotherapist, scholar and activist, Dr. Gail Lewis, can be read here.
