Please join us for a DoVA Alumni Lecture by artist John Preus. Preus will talk about his work as an artist, art fabricator, and contractor.
John Preus developed his multidisciplinary practice from roots in both painting and furniture-making, which became entwined in his collaborative work with Material Exchange in graduate school at the University of Chicago. The product of 6 generations of Lutheran pastors stretching back to Norway, he grew up in Tanzania, to Lutheran missionaries, which influenced how he thinks about materials, appropriation, the possibility of shared values, and the clash of cultures. Preus is also a fabricator for other artists and designers, which has influenced his thoughts on authorship and collaboration.
Preus has been Interpreter in Residence at the Smart Museum, a Kaplan resident at Northwestern University, a Jackman-Goldwasser resident at the Hyde Park Art Center, an Efroymson fellow, recipient of the maker grant, propeller fund, multiple DCASE grants, Preus’s work is included in many public and private collections. He is represented by the Rhona Hoffman Gallery in Chicago, the Rena Bransten Gallery in San Francisco, and Pentimenti Gallery in Philadelphia.

Events at the Logan Center are open to all invitees who are compliant with UChicago and Logan Center vaccination requirements and, because of ongoing health risks, particularly to the unvaccinated, participants are expected to adopt the risk mitigation measures (masking and social distancing, etc.) appropriate to their vaccination status as advised by public health officials or to their individual vulnerabilities as advised by a medical professional. Public convening may not be safe for all and carries a risk for contracting COVID-19, particularly for those unvaccinated. Participants will not know the vaccination status of others and should follow appropriate risk mitigation measures.
All visitors to the Logan Center over age 12 who are attending public events in venues with fixed seating must provide proof of vaccination and wear masks. By exception, visitors who are unable to be vaccinated for medical reasons or due to a sincerely-held religious belief may provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of the event, or proof of a positive test 14-90 days prior to the event with affirmation that you are not experiencing any symptoms. Proof of vaccination or COVID test must be in English. University of Chicago students and staff subject to the University’s vaccine requirements may demonstrate proof of compliance by presenting their UChicago ID (UCID).
