David Schutter is a painter whose most recent one person exhibitions have engaged with the 17th Century Dutch Collection of the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin. Spending a year painting a portion of this collection from memory only, Schutter then hung his new works in opposition to the original sources in an installation at the Gemäldegalerie, Staatliche Museum, Berlin. He was a resident for that period in the International Studio Program at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin. The project was shown in concurrent exhibitions in the US at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and Tony Wight/Bodybuilder & Sportsman Gallery, Chicago. The re-workings of a Jacob van Ruisdael painting from the same collection were shown in solo exhibitions at Galerie Aurel Scheibler, Berlin and Paul Kotula Projects, Detroit. He has participated in group exhibitions at Galerie Aurel Scheibler, Cologne and Berlin, Bodybuilder & Sportsman Gallery, Chicago, Gallery 312, Chicago, Valerie Carberry Gallery, Chicago, The Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago, Revolution Gallery, Detroit, Detroit Artist Market, Detroit, The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia and The Museum of American Art, Philadelphia. His work is in the collections of the Gemäldegalerie, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Silkeborg Kunstmuseum, Silkeborg, Denmark, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, The Gilbert & Lila Silverman Collection, Detroit, and The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia. Publications include Afterpaintings: Recollected Works from the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin (catalogue), inclusion in New American Paintings, and reviews in Art in America, Art News, Art Papers, The Chicago Tribune, and The Chicago Sun Times. Schutter is a recipient of both Humboldt and Fulbright Grants, for Germany and Denmark respectively, and received his MFA from The University of Chicago.
